One of the small, yet somehow most annoying challenges faced by businesses switching to Office 365 is the loss of custom URLs and well known naming conventions that users have become familiar with.
Today we will focus on friendly URL for Outlook Web App only, as it is a popular request among our customers.
Standalone Office 365 scenario just doesn’t allow you to control your OWA URL, like an off-site Exchange or hybrid scenario would. Instead of your old, friendly URL, which has been used ever since, you end up with http://portal.microsoft.com as the universal entering point for the whole Office 365 suite. Once logged in you need to choose where to proceed – Mail, SharePoint, OneDrive…
End users likely use just (OWA) e-mail most of the time.
The direct URL for Exchange Online (Office 365) is: mail.office365.com
Slightly better, you get to skip a step where user have to choose what to open and he / she gets into the mailbox directly.
However, if you are in control of your DNS records, you can do even better.
Create a CNAME for mail.yourdomain.com which points to mail.office365.com
Now your end users can access their Outlook Web App in Office 365 using http://mail.yourdomain.com because it automatically redirects to https://mail.office365.com.
This is the easiest way of providing your users with a friendly Office 365 OWA URL. Please note there are very different approaches for hybrid scenarios.
